  1. This is a list of Achimedes files held on the Lancaster University server on 0524 843878.
  2. I managed to connnect at V32bis (14.4k) but I don't know what other standards it supports.
  3. When you log in you appear to be in a simple Unix-type command line shell. You type in
  4. commands, such as:
  5.   CAT file       List a file
  6.   ZMODEM file    Send file to you via Zmodem transfer
  7.   CD dir         Change directory
  8.   HELP           There is ample help available
  9.  
  10. The help is very good and it only takes a couple of minutes tofind your way around.
  11. You can also access thie computer via Internet/ftp, and the details are available
  12. on-line.

  20. INDEX OF ARCHIMEDES RISCOS SOFTWARE                     Updated 04/12/93 @ 1529

  22. Each item of software on the Archive has been stored in a separate
  23. sub-directory, which is identified by a prefix code.  The list below shows you
  24. the prefixes, date put online, special keys and a one line description of the
  25. package. In each of the package directories is a file with suffix ".msg"
  26. which contains more information about the package and a file "00contents" which
  27. is a directory listing of the package directory.
  28.  
  29. The 'key' field in the list can contain at most 4 characters An 'S' as the
  30. first character denotes the package is ShareWare. An 'R' as the second
  31. character  denotes that the package has been reviewed (the package directory
  32. will contain a file with a ".rvw" suffix). The third and fourth characters 
  33. are reserved for future use.

  35. The 'Date' field shows the date that  the package was installed on the
  36. archive. If the package has been updated, then the date field will contain the
  37. update date. Dates shown as 00/00/00 indicate that the field is not being
  38. maintained for the package and typically means that the package is being
  39. updated regularly (for example digests).
  40.  
  41. ACCESSING THE PACKAGE
  42. ---------------------
  43. If you're accessing the files from a terminal, you'll need to change directory
  44. to the sub-directory concerned.  For example, if you want the package with
  45. prefix "a001", you'd do
  46.  
  47.                  cd micros/arch/riscos/a/a001
  48.  
  49. (assuming you're in the top level directory). [Note the "a" sub-directory which
  50. is derived from the first letter of the prefix.]
  51.  
  52. Access by FTP is similar: here you always need to give a full pathname for the
  53. files you want, so the files in this example would be
  54.  
  55.                 micros/arch/riscos/a/a001/...
  56.  
  57. Within each directory is a file called "00contents" (the first two digits are
  58. zeros), which gives a list of all the other filenames in the directory. Thus,
  59. if you are using FTP, it's best to pull this first to see what's there. So
  60. that, in this example, you would start by pulling
  61.  
  62.                 micros/arch/riscos/a/a001/00contents
  63.  
  64. TOOLS
  65. -----
  66. The sub-directory "tools", i.e.
  67.

  70. contains programs you'll require to decode and unpack the arch-riscos packages.
  71. The file "tools_help" in the directory gives full instructions on how to obtain
  72. working versions of the programs on your Archimedes.

  76. The sub-directory "news", i.e.

  80. contains back copies of the arch-riscos newsletter which is distributed by us
  81. via e-mail.  For registration information see the "00readme" file in the
  82. directory.

  86. Submissions may be sent by e-mail to pdarch@micros.hensa.ac.uk or uploaded
  87. by ftp to micros.hensa.ac.uk, login and password 'uploads' in the directory
  88. arch-riscos.

  91.                  NOTE ON SUITABILITY OF SOFTWARE
  92.  
  93. HENSA does not itself check material for virus infection. However, programs are
  94. downloaded from archives that are known to be reliable sources, and the
  95. incidence of proven virus infection is extremely low. It remains the
  96. responsibility of the software user to assure himself that there is no risk,
  97. and to this end HENSA carries a wide and constantly-updated set of virus
  98. checking software.
